About Me

Hey! I’m Alex Heart, a tattoo artist and writer residing in Auckland, New Zealand, and I love storytelling.

So where did this love for story start?

It’s been with me as long as I can remember. My family also had a lot of foreign exchange students while I was growing up, so my love for anime started early and I loved the incredible universes and unique stories they were able to tell through animation.

I then went on to manage a video store (yes, back when those were a thing) so I’ve spent a good amount of time watching movie after movie. Always partial to a good horror, romance, fantasy, action, tragedy or anything with a deep story or fun artistic vision. 

for a hot minute there, I also played drums in a punk band while studying graphic design. Music has also always been a huge inspiration in my life and art. I have Synesthesia, so music tends to illicit some pretty cool stories of their own whenever I listen to it. 

Video games on the other hand, I’ve loved ever since I got my first consoles. Platformers have always been a great way for me to relax while more story driven RPGs and action-adventure games create another level of immersion into story. There’s nothing quite like taking control of the character and setting out on a great adventure.

In more recent years (now that my ADHD is under control) I have fallen in love with books. The ideas explored, the imagery a word can conjure and how they can make us feel so deeply. Books have a magical way of making us feel seen. They can take us on wild adventures and guide us into the minds of others. You’re never alone with a good book in your hands. 

Now this passion has become my day to day…

 I get so much joy from bringing your favourite stories to life in your skin when I tattoo you. Whether it’s anime, Disney, gaming, comics, music, or movies, I nerd out over it all alongside you. Tattooing the things you love, the stories that have helped you through difficult times, or the characters you’ve found a connection with is a powerful and unique way to embrace your own story. It’s always an honor to be a part of celebrating what you love and working in an art form where self expression and passion lives in our skin and becomes a part of us just as these stories have a way of doing.

When I’m designing tattoos, story and character is always at the forefront of my process. I love delving into the characters and media we love, exploring what resonates with people, and creating tattoos that capture those impactful moments that speak to us.

Outside of tattooing you’ll also find me working on stories of my own. Most of which tend to explore themes of love, connection and mystery.

Currently, I’ve just finished up my first novel, Gatekeeper. Think Annihilation meets Constantine with a splash of Indiana Jones. If you enjoy fantasy, mystery, romance, a touch of eldritch horror, it’ll be right up your alley. I’m currently navigating the publishing journey while working on the next book, and I’m excited to see where the adventure takes me.
